Princeton YMCA Receives Grant from Princeton Area Community Foundation to Support Summer Camp
Princeton, New Jersey, June 24, 2025 – Princeton YMCA, a branch of Greater Somerset County YMCA, has received a $25,000 grant from the Princeton Area Community Foundation to support its summer camp programs, which include swimming lessons and a strong social-emotional learning component. The grant will be used to provide scholarships to under resourced youth living in the Princeton community.
The Princeton Area Community Foundation is awarding a total of $487,500 in 2025 Summer Initiative grants to 21 local nonprofits that offer camps and programs designed to prevent summer learning loss and provide affordable childcare for working families.
Princeton YMCA's Camp Falcon offers a wide variety of experiences to meet the interests of every child. With both traditional multi-activity and specialty camp options—including sports, dance, STEM, and teen travel. Camp Falcon serves children entering Kindergarten through 8th grade in September.
Camp Falcon is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA), which sets the highest national standards for day camps. This seal of approval means the Y meets up to 300 rigorous health, safety, and program quality standards, underscoring its commitment to providing a safe, enriching environment for all campers.
"On behalf of the entire Princeton YMCA community, we thank the Princeton Area Community Foundation for supporting summer camp at Princeton YMCA," said Heather Scapp, Branch Executive Director of Princeton YMCA. "Ensuring the families we serve have access to a safe and fun summer is central to our mission. This generous grant will allow us to reach more families and further integrate social-emotional learning into our daily camp activities and beyond."

When your kids have graduated the local Day Care, Rec. Program, or "Camp Mom", and you're looking for the next logical step in giving a wonderful growth experience away from video games, smart phones, the internet, and TV – Summer Camp is the answer! In the last summer, over 20 million children attended Day Camps, Resident Camps, and specialty programs across the country- Here's some helpful pointers to find the best fit for your child:
ACA ACCREDITED – While county and state health departments have guidelines for Camps, American Camp Association standards are much stricter, and ensure the high quality supervision and facility that most parents want for their children. You can find the best camps in the country directly through the ACA website at find.acacamps.org.
DAY CAMP vs. RESIDENT – Do your children wish to sleep in their own beds, or away in the mountains in a cabin of new friends? While Resident Camp is the "real-deal," Day Camp is the logical first step, and many Day Camp programs are very adept at keeping their older campers through progressive programming.
LENGTH OF STAY, HOURS OF THE DAY – How many weeks? What time does it start? When can you drop your kids off? When can you pick them up? All important questions for busy families who should be able to get what they need in regards to their specific childcare needs and session length flexibility.
COST – There are Camps available for every budget, but as we all know – you often get what you pay for. Many Private Camps offer extensive programs with mature, experienced staff, and lots of amenities – but subsequently come with a heftier price tag. Non-Profit camps can offer less "spectacular" programming, younger staff, and less amenities, but can be an affordable alternative. Find out what discounts are offered, the refund policy, and what ALL the costs are.
STAFF – Who is directly interacting with your child? If it's primarily middle-school and high school students, that is something to be concerned about. The best Camps have teachers and college students running their programs with high school students simply assisting. ***And very Important: Meet the director and speak with him/her in person, for it is their personality and philosophy that trickles down to the rest of the Camp staff. You are entrusting these people to take care of your children, and you need to be comfortable with them doing so.
PROGRAM & FACILITIES – Go for a visit to see if the facility gives you a good feeling. Is there daily swim instruction? Is there a pool or a lake? Athletic fields? How extensive is the Fine Arts program – Is it popsicle sticks or serious projects? Performing Arts? You need to decide what's important to YOUR child. Is it computer coding, climbing towers, water trampolines – or a diverse mix? And who chooses the activities- the kids, or the camp?
AMENITIES – These items are "icing on the cake", but are very important to most working parents: Transportation – what are the parameters? Are lunches and snacks included? There are even Camps with towel service and bathing suit laundering! What kind of customer service do they offer? These days, communication is king- So find out how they stay in touch with their camp families.
REFERENCES – "Word of mouth" is by far the greatest factor in choosing a Camp for most people. So speak to your friends who attend the Camps you are considering, or ask the Camp if you can contact families from your area with like-aged children. In most cases, these parents will give you a better idea of the Camp than the website or marketing materials will.
Camp is a big financial decision for your family, and you should feel confident that you are making the right choice. So take your time, do your homework, and ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS!

Summer Camp: The Antidote to Screen-Based Society

At a local restaurant last week with my family, we were seated next to a family who had just given their order to the waiter. They then immediately took out their phones and proceeded to stare, scroll, and play on them for the entire time they were waiting for their food... and then continued while they were EATING! Crazy, but not surprising these days, and it made me think of Jonathan Haidt's 2024 book, "The Anxious Generation: The Great Rewiring of Childhood."
According to research cited by Haidt, the average teen spends five hours per day on social media, mostly on TikTok and YouTube. If you add messaging, video games, school, TV- it's 8-10 hours per day on screens, leaving little room for much else. We are all being constantly interrupted and distracted by an average of 257 notifications per day- kids during school or doing homework, and adults during work and with their families. This "attention fragmentation" reduces our capacity to stay on task, get things done, and pay attention to what's around us.
"Phone-based childhood" took off with the introduction of the iPhone in 2009, with most young teens having a smartphone in their pocket by 2015. Children's lives quickly went from the real world to the digital world, connected to the internet while disconnected from one another. Kids went from watching TV together as a family or group of friends, to going over to each other's houses and watching different videos on their separate phones. Even video games now force kids to play in separate homes, on separate consoles, alone.
Haidt cites this kind of social deprivation as a major factor for anxiety with young people. Kids need to spend time with other kids to develop their social skills. Once kids get a phone, data shows that their actual time with friends, plunges. "Online time with friends" is no substitute. Screen-free Summer Camp is the perfect antidote to this social development epidemic.
Haidt offers four common sense solutions to help children navigate modern society:
1. No Phones in the Schools- It's happening already! In the UK, Canada, 18 US states, and brave school districts willing to go against the will of needy parents (Kids actually love it!) Banning phones in schools is a return to sanity, with test scores this year improving by 6% in schools with banned phones. We've never allowed phones at my Summer Camps, and the kids consistently THANK US for it.
2. No Smart Phones until High School- Give'em a flip phone! 10- and 11-year-olds only have smart phones because "everybody else has them," a true tragedy of the commons. Hold back giving your kid a phone risks them being socially isolated and miserable- or, do what everyone else does, and risk making your child stressed, and depressed, with unnecessary social pressures and unfiltered nonsense. It's a no-win situation for parents... until Summer Camp season rolls around!!
3. No Social Media Until Age 16- it's just not suitable for minors, and we all know it. TikTok has been socializing our teens the past few years, with an addiction similar to gambling, resulting in significant mental health issues. If any other consumer product had this kind of negative effect, we'd do something about it. But Americans overprotect our kids from the "real world," while under-protecting them from the virtual world of algorhithmic and human internet predators. Bring on Summer Camp screen detox!
4. More Unstructured, Unsupervised Play- Humans enjoyed a play-based childhood for millions of years, as mammals play is key for all mammals in brain development, developing skills, and risk taking. Young people NEED play, thrills, and excitement, and boys need physical play. This was the norm prior to the 1990s. We played outside, got into trouble, and learned how to stay out of trouble. Then, parents and schools became focused on prepping for career success, but not for life. Teachers teach for the test, while parents navigate their kids' lives to get them into the right college, the right job, and the right salary. Society decided that we needed more math and less recess, while kids just need to go out and play. While Summer Camp is supervised, it's a place where kids learn how to develop and manage social relationships.
High quality Summer Camps cultivate a strong sense of community and purpose, encouraging their campers and staff to empathize and help one another, which brings residual joy, and a sense of optimism.
Summer Camp feels so magical to kids because it fosters a unique sense of community that's unlike anything else in their lives. A tight community looking out for one another, giving comfort, knowing that they can count on each other, while developing the skills of making and keeping friends.
At Summer Camp, kids develop strong relationships with their peers and role-model counselors, creating a foundation that forges resiliency in the face of stressors like the heat, liquid sunshine, frustrations, disappointments, compromises, and more. They learn that it's easier to handle challenging situations when part of a supportive community. Camp doesn't eliminate hardships; it cultivates relationships that will be there to support us through tough situations.
When speaking with Jonathan Haidt recently, I told him all about Liberty Lake, with our outdoor, screen-free, supportive community. He's a big believer in Summer Camp, and he wanted me to convey to our camp parents that perhaps the biggest benefit of the camp experience is the aspect of risk-taking, forcing kids out of their comfort zones, and pushing them beyond their perceived limits. It's a skill that children can't learn while sitting home in bubble-wrap or being shuttled to and from adult led obligations. The learned skill of taking safe risks as a young person will help them find the courage in life to try new things, take chances on a great idea, ask someone out on a date, put down their phone and get off the couch to go out and experience the rites of passage in life that can only be achieved through real, human relationships.

Ultimate Frisbee Summer Camp at The Lawrenceville School
Ultimate Peace to hold second groundbreaking international Ultimate Frisbee Summer camp at The Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, NJ from June 29th to July 5th.
Ultimate Peace’s mission is to build bridges of friendship, understanding, and leadership between youth separated by social, cultural, and political divides. Ultimate Peace uses the values-based sport of Ultimate Frisbee as context for its unifying work – with no referees in the game, players learn to resolve differences on the field. These skills transfer off the field, cultivating mutual understanding, unlikely friendships, and shared leadership.
Since 2010, Ultimate Peace has run year-round community-based sports and leadership programs in the Middle East, bringing together disconnected Arab, Palestinian, and Jewish youth. Ultimate Peace is acclaimed for its non-political approach to peacebuilding, succeeding by strengthening trust, respect, and relationships first, delaying confronting divisive topics that plague the region.
Jim Levine, Princeton resident and Camp Co-Director, reflected: “2023 was a huge success. Diverse campers from across the US and Canada spent a transformative week together, in many ways creating a similar culture to our Middle East camp, one in which acceptance, self-discovery, and community bonding are all integral to the days’ fun. The Lawrenceville School is an exceptional partner for this work”.
Just like 2023, diverse North American teens will travel from Atlanta, Philadelphia, Vancouver, New York, San Francisco, Chicago and Seattle, as well a First Nations Community in BC, and nearby Columbia High School, ultimate frisbee’s birthplace.
The 2024 camp will up the ante. This summer, 12 Israeli and Palestinian campers, as well as 4 of their coaches will also travel to camp. Unable to convene the usual summer camp locally due to the current war, Ultimate Peace has found a way to provide this rejuvenating opportunity for youth and adults from the Middle East program.
Additionally, twelve young women from India will be coming to camp as part of a gender-equity project that aims to train 100 female coaches who will lead youth teams in India. Six top youth athletes from communities in Colombia with little access to organized programs will join this extraordinary community.
Ultimate Peace Executive Director and founder, Dr. David Barkan, explained the rationale for these efforts: “The reason we are forever dedicated to bringing youth together who would never otherwise meet, play together, and become friends is based on one simple belief: people on this planet need one another more than ever, and we must prepare the youth of today to carry this tenet forward as they become tomorrow’s leaders.”
Additional information is available at www.ultimatepeace.org, and everyone is invited to follow Ultimate Peace on Facebook and Instagram for updates from camp.

Kids Discover Their Potential At Summer Camp
Life is hard. We know this, and yet so many children grow up sheltered from hardships, as their well-meaning parents unknowingly hold them back. In Adam Grant's excellent new book, "Hidden Potential," (2023) he lays out the importance of children working through tough situations, to build the character skills needed to be successful in life as an adult.
Grant explains, "Character is often confused with personality, but personality is your basic instincts for how to think, feel, and act. Character is your capacity to prioritize your values over your instincts." It's more than having principles. Character is the learned ability to live by your principles- like fulfilling promises, standing up for what's right, and managing your emotions. These are skills that Summer Camp nurtures, and great coaches and mentors cultivate.
Helen Keller wrote, "Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experiences of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and success achieved."
While I'm not advocating suffering, children do need to experience and learn from the inevitable challenges they encounter, in order to strengthen their inner-resilience. Kids are amazingly "Anti-Fragile," meaning that when exposed to stress, they actually become stronger. "Successful people of character are able to overcome life's hurdles because they learn how to get comfortable being uncomfortable." This is a learned character trait that can unlock tremendous potential in children.
Going off to Summer Camp, just like going off to college, or starting a new job, can be an impactful challenge for a child- and it's completely normal for children to initially push back on the idea. It's something new and different, and of course, they'd rather sit home and stare at their screens! But we know better, and it's our job to teach kids to push beyond their perceived limits and cultivate the confidence and courage to abandon their comfort zone.
Facing fears, and confronting discomfort are skills that if not strengthened in childhood, may never be gained as an adult. It's easier for young people to learn these skills, as they don't have the same fear of embarrassment nor discomfort from making mistakes- Kids mess up all the time! When properly debriefed (our job,) mistakes become teachable moments that set the character mold for the rest of their lives. It's more important than ever in today's world for kids to experience these moments, and gain these skills.
In the alarming new book about A.I., "The Coming Wave," (2023,) author Mustafa Suleyman explains how during times of exponential technological growth, "those that survive are the ones best able to adapt." While just a few generations ago, families traveled by horse and cart and burned wood for heat, today we live in an age in which artificial intelligence is emulating human thought, and rapidly changing the way we live.
Like it or not, technology is replacing everything it possibly can, making interpersonal HUMAN skills to "recognize, value, assimilate, and apply new information" the priority for future generations to learn and master. At old school Summer Camps, we hone these critical thinking skills hands on, as kids/staff have to think on their feet while encountering the everyday challenges and opportunities that present themselves.
Yes, Summer Camp is a lot of "fun and games," but equally as important, are the constant opportunities of learning and honing character skills like meeting new people, trying new things, speaking up, and asking questions. Toss in some extreme heat, an occasional tropical storm, and the opportunity to experience life without digital screens, and Summer Camp can prove to be a seriously impactful, building block of experiences. While little kids learn patience and sharing, big kids manage the nuanced ins and outs of social relationships, and young staff learn valuable leadership skills.
Summer Camp can also be challenging at times, just like real life. Camp is the perfect playground for young people to push themselves, while building the grit and resilience needed for a successful adulthood.

They are navigating post-lockdown life with the intense pressures of screen-based friendships, self-esteem in the volatile hands of social media, academic demands, as well as the societal effects of climate change, gun violence, economic inflation, and political nastiness.
But alas, many have found a great way to unplug, decompress and see life from a fresh vantage point- At Summer Camp! This winter has seen unprecedented numbers of campers enrolling in Summer Camp programs, by parents recognizing the need to pry their kids off their screens and regain their social skills. Many high school and college students have found a similar reprieve from the weight of worldly cares by WORKING at Summer Camp as well. With fresh air, sunshine, laughter, comradery, friendships, responsibility, and a whole lot of FUN- it's the ultimate summer job, and a great option to let loose, hone their lost social skills, and develop the work ethic and professionalism that employers are seeking.
In my new favorite book "The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas are Setting up a Generation for Failure," authors/researchers Greg Lukanoff and Jonathan Haidt bring to light the unintended consequences of how raising children has evolved in the past decade.
· Fragility: What doesn't kill you makes you... weaker? Wasn't it "What doesn't kill you makes you STRONGER?" Young people have been taught and encouraged of late to be risk-averse. Attending or working at Summer Camp can be super-fun AND super-challenging. They meet new people, develop and nurture friendships, learn to compromise, try new things, and at most camps- persevere through the heat and "liquid sunshine." Longitudinal research spearheaded by the American Camp Association is showing unequivocally that young people attending or working at Camp come out stronger, and more resilient!
· Emotional Reasoning: Always trust your feelings? We've all experienced negative, and even overwhelming emotions at times. To be emotionally healthy though, we need to learn to manage these feelings and not let them rule our lives and logic. At Summer Camp, any given day can be an emotional rollercoaster. There will be winning and losing, disagreements with friends, fear of failure, and disappointments like NOT getting your favorite blue ice pop! It's REAL LIFE, in a structured, well-supervised setting where we turn stressors into growth opportunities, preparing young people for the inevitable challenges that lie ahead of them.
· Us vs. Them: That life is a battle between good and evil people. Cancel culture has become normalized by what has transpired on the news, in colleges, and in the workplace, causing negativity and polarization. Meanwhile, there are huge commonalities of shared beliefs between all of us. While accepting differences in others can be difficult, good Summer Camps create a training ground to practice diversity, equity, and inclusion. Whether it's the annoying kid on the bus, the kid that looks different, the kid with physical or emotional challenges, or even the quirky counselor, Camp creates an environment where young people learn to adapt and build an understanding and appreciation for the uniqueness of others.
It's been a rough past few years, but a "covid silver lining" is the that families are now recognizing the significant effects on their children of increased screen time/social media, isolation, anxiety, depression, prescription drugs, and over the top parental "safetyism" which has led to declining free play. Parents are actively seeking solutions, and they have found one in Summer Camp.
That's the good news. The bad news is that Camps are filling up quicker than ever, so do your research and reserve your spots now! The word is out, that Summer Camp is way more than kickball, making bracelets, and cooling off in the pool. It's the ultimate learning environment for young people, including young staff, to develop and practice the social skills essential for success in the 21st century. Nothing compares to the Camp Experience!

Southwoods - A Summer Camp Feel Good Story
PARADOX, NY – For 25 years, Camp Southwoods built a reputation as one of the finest resident camp programs in the country. Then suddenly, their fearless leader fell terminally ill, and the pandemic hit- cancelling a season. Enter seven colleagues/friends who have banded together to restore Camp Southwoods to prominence, with shorter session options and a renewed energy.
Scott Ralls built Camp Southwoods 25 years ago on the side of a beautiful mountain in the Adirondacks. Recently bestowed the "Legend of Camping" honor posthumously by his peers, Scott was an influential leader with the American Camp Association, both regionally and nationally, as well as with Project Morry, a non-profit created in honor of his mentor, who also passed away tragically at a young age. Ralls' big heart and larger than life personality were important factors as to why seven like-minded camp professionals have joined together to honor their friend's legacy.
"Camp Southwoods is a beautiful facility, with an epic waterfront. And while they may have lost their fearless leader, his spirit remains, and we're honored to be able to bring it back to glory," says new partner Andy Pritikin, owner/director of Liberty Lake Day Camp, in NJ- who was convinced by Ralls to follow him as the President of the American Camp Association, NY & NJ. Pritikin points out that Southwoods partner Sam Borek, owner/director of Woodmont Day Camp, in New City, NY- then followed Andy as the Association President.
"We've put together a dream team of camp operators, some who've started their own camps, and some who have revitalized their camps," says new partner Mark Transport, owner/director of Crestwood Day Camp in Melville (Long Island), NY, the "turnaround artist" of the new ownership team, who brought in Crestwood partner Mark Hemmerdinger as well. On-site director/partner Steve Bluth, who co-helmed the camp in 2021 is giddy with excitement, "With the brain trust of our new partnership, we're invigorating Camp Southwoods with an awesome new energy to take it to new heights- The enrolled families and alumni are just as psyched as we are!"
The announcement of the regime change included a change of sessions to 2, 4, or 6 week enrollment options. "Shorter sessions at resident camp have become the new flavor of choice, especially for first time camp families," says partner Jeff Gould, owner/director of Independent Lake Camp, in Wayne County, PA, whose camp specializes in short season campers. Since the recent announcement, dozens of new campers have signed on, from the Philadelphia to Boston corridor, and as far away as Europe.
"Scott was a larger than life figure, and a mentor to us all. It's a privilege to carry the Southwood torch for him and his family," says Gregg Licht, owner/director of Elmwood Day Camp, in Ardsley, NY. "and the timing couldn't be more perfect," adds Borek, "with families coming out of the pandemic seeking summer camps for their kids like we've never seen before!"
For these seven seasoned camp operators, taking over the beautiful Adirondack camp on Paradox Lake in honor of their longtime friend is an opportunity that they embrace with vigor and purpose. Pritikin ads, "We are all friends with a common belief that summer camp is the ultimate environment to teach kids important life skills, in a beautiful, outdoor, technology-free environment. After 2 years of compromised life, young people need summer camp more than ever, and we've got a perfect place for them at Southwoods!"

Summer Camp: The Hot Ticket for 2022
Too much screen time over the past decade and its residual effects on young people have been exacerbated by the pandemic response of “educating by isolating.” Relegated to their bedrooms, basements, kitchens, and college dorms, most socially distanced students were FORCED to stare at their screens from March 2020 until May/June 2021. This extended time of keeping students from physically interacting with peers and teachers has resulted in a mental health crisis we will be feeling for a very long time.
After 15 months of semi-seclusion, missed social opportunities, and frayed friendships, young people were acting out: antisocial behaviors, fights, emotional breakdowns, defiance, anxiety, and depression. Summer camps, however, offered an oasis of sorts- a reset, an antidote, a social-emotional vaccine. Campers, staff, and even school teachers had a magical and energizing experience being outside, socializing, playing, and interacting again!
The past two summers affirmed unequivocally that there’s no better place for children and young adults to learn and regain their social and emotional equilibrium than at Summer Camp. Here’s what we observed:
And there’s more good news. Thousands of parents who never went to camp, and never sent their children to camp before, have reassessed the summer camp cost/benefit analysis and are flooding American Camp Association accredited camps with registrations like never before. The pandemic has suddenly made Summer Camp as important as it should be. So if you’re interested in Camp for your kids this summer, don’t delay- because many of the best camps out there have already started waiting lists!

2021 Looks to Be Another COVID-19 Summer: Camp in the Time of COVID-19
.jpg)
Open or closed in summer 2020, camps are looking to 2021 and evaluating options for operations next summer. Just as the virus was “novel,” camps that operated during the 2020 season often reported a “camp reimagined” experience, with dates shifted, occupancy limited, public health measures in place, and programs altered to meet the new reality of the pandemic. How will camps need to plan, prepare, and operate for the 2021 season? While much uncertainty continues, a COVID-19-free landscape is unlikely. Provided here are updates on the progress of the pandemic and expert insights into the hot topics of the time to assist camp professionals in planning and implementing safe and engaging camp experiences during the upcoming year.

Both the Princeton Recreation Department Day Camp and Teen Travel Camp have been cancelled for summer 2020 as a result of the COVID pandemic in an effort to protect the safety, health & well-being of the hundreds of campers, camp counselors, and staff. The Recreation Department is committed to developing a variety of new and/or modified programs this summer, some virtual, and hopefully some in-person later in the summer. Full refunds will be issued shortly for those that have already registered for camp. If you prefer a credit to your account instead of a refund, please contact the Recreation Department no later than Thursday, May 28 via email at: recreation@princetonnj.gov
From Recreation Department Director Ben Stentz:
On a personal note, I want to share my sadness with you about this difficult decision. While I do believe this is the safest decision on behalf of the children of our community, it doesn't make it any easier to accept. I was a camper at the PRD Day Camp nearly 35 years ago, and later I worked as a Camp Counselor. Years later, my son attended both Day and Travel Camp. PRD camps are a critical rite of passage for our kids and part of the year over year, and generation to generation fabric of what makes Princeton special.

On June 7 at Princeton’s ETS Campus, HomeFront’s 11th annual Rock and Roll for Hope 5K and 1Mile Run/Walk will be the place for anyone who wants to get some exercise, loves music or wants to help over 100 local children make the sweet summer memories they deserve. Proceeds from this major community effort attracted 1000 people last year and funds the HomeFront Summer Camp program for children who are currently homeless or are at-risk. The 8-week camp provides two nutritious meals a day, recreation and field trips, daily academic tutoring and a no-cost, safe place for children so their parents can work full time during the summer when school is out. The event also contributes funding to HomeFront’s year-round Joy, Hopes, and Dream’s children’s programming.
Shayla G., recalled how important HomeFront’s summer camps have been to her 14 year old son and 12 year old daughter over the years: “My kids have never been on a vacation because we didn’t have the money. Camp gave them the real sweetness of summer. I remember my daughter proudly showing me how she learned to swim at camp, holding her breath and going underwater in the bathtub. People came from Lawrence Lacrosse to camp and gave my son a lacrosse stick, and he played all summer. They also gave him a scholarship to join their team and he’s still playing with them. HomeFront was my #1 during the summers. I’ve been sad I couldn’t give my kids more, being disabled and not having the money, but HomeFront’s camp gave them something really fun, [field] trips, and so much more. I’m so grateful.
The Rock & Roll musical component to HomeFront’s 5K began 2 years ago and this year 10 rock and music bands will line the race course to entertain runners.
Local music teacher, Jesse Neuman, who will be playing with his rock band, HIVE, is bringing his band to the 5K for the third year. “My non profit Musicworks began teaching music classes to children at HomeFront’s Family Campus in 2018 and the experience has been fantastic. The faculty is full of generosity and passion and the kids bask in the attention and warmth they receive. We had an absolute blast performing at the Rock and Roll for Hope 5K last year and can’t wait to make our support for this great, great cause felt-and heard- again!”
HomeFront’s goal is 1,000 people this year so anyone interested in participating in this joyous community event suitable for all ages is welcome; Events include the 5K Run/Walk, 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk, completing the last run the last mile of a half or full marathon; register at www.homefrontnj.org. There will be games, awards, prizes for the best Rock & Roll costumes and largest fundraisers, refreshments and Starbucks coffee. For questions about forming a team or sponsoring the event, email sukiw@homefrontnj.org

Boys & Girls Club Summer Camp Appeal
BGC Summer Camp applications are going really well – exceeding last year! Now, we need your help - to ensure all kids in need can attend summer camp. Our summer camp drive is underway! This drive allows more of our community youth to attend camp which has all sorts of benefits ---campers receive lunch and participate in a wide variety of activities like swimming, field trips, STEM, outdoor education, cooking, art, literacy support and more. Many of us take these things for granted, but these are opportunities most of our kids would not have access to otherwise. Free school lunches aren't available during the summer break. Most of our youth would stay at home if it weren't for camp. Working parents have limited resources and our youth would not otherwise receive critical enrichment and learning during the summer school break.

Then and Now: Why Summer Camp is More Important than Ever Before
For thousands of years we made friends organically, until about 15 years ago, when we began meeting people through MySpace, Facebook, Instagram, and video game headsets. While we used to play outside after school, and on the weekends - now most neighborhoods look like outdoor ghost towns. Where are the children? Oh, we know where most of them are…staring at their glowing screens.
Don’t get me wrong, I love IMDB and YouTube, but experts agree that as a human race, we are quickly losing our social/relationship skills, simply because we aren’t using them with much frequency anymore.
NOT THEIR FAULT, OURS
I was at an NFL tailgate party recently, one of the last bastions of old-school socializing, watching a 10 year old boy mercilessly begging his parents for his iPad, and then proceed to sit in the car for an hour playing games on it. Not his fault - his parents’ enabled the behavior.
8 to 18 year olds consume an average of over 7 hours of screen media per day, often while multi-tasking, a statistic that has increased 2.5 hours in the past 10 years. Their excessive screen time is linked to emotional and behavior problems, and difficulty with peers and school.
“I Just Want my Kids to be Happy”
A multi-year study of 50,000 high schoolers led by noted author/researcher Jean Twenge, showed unequivocally that the happiest kids use screens less than an hour per day, and that teens who spend more time in face-to-face, in-person interaction with friends are happiest. It turns out there is an inverse relationship between happiness and time spent on screens for our children. So how and where can we distract kids from their screens while giving them the best opportunity to grow into good people and contributing members of society? Two words:
*SUMMER CAMP*
Traditional, outdoor, hot, sweaty, buggy, muddy, Summer Camp. Because, simply put, Camp is the antidote to the traps of modern society: face-to-face interactions, collaborating in groups, and navigating the ups and downs of relationships. It’s also a place where kind, caring people other than parents teach life skills like making friendships, integrity, self-regulation and independence. At my Camp it’s simple: Electronics are strictly forbidden. While at first the kids (and staff) may complain, in the end they literally thank us.
THE GOOD NEWS
In the 25 years that I’ve been running summer camps, I am seeing the pendulum swinging back to a sense of normalcy with today’s parents.
The new generation is also more concerned about gaining new experiences and being good people - two things that good Camps specialize in. Look at the stats, look at your kids! Summer Camp is more important now than ever before, filling the societal gap left by institutionalized schools, busy parents and glowing screens!

Old Barracks Teams Up With Nicky Fifth Foundation to Bring Trenton Students to Historic Summer Camp
Trenton, NJ—The Old Barracks Museum's annual summer camp has been a summer staple in Trenton for over twenty years. The summer marks a landmark year, as the Nicky Fifth Foundation brings 50 Trenton students to experience 18th century life this summer. Two weeks of camp are offered this summer, from July 10-14 and July 17-21.
The Nicky Fifth Foundation has offered scholarships to children who reside in The City of Trenton to attend the Old Barracks Summer Camp during the month of July. This week-long day camp will introduce students from the ages of 9-12 to the most immersive and interactive method of learning about life during the Revolution and the amazing contributions of their city. Students were recommended by principals and guidance counselors based upon their attitude, work ethic, and desire to learn. This is not an academic based scholarship, Members of the Nicky Fifth Foundation will be on hand to assist campers, provide lunch, and, when necessary, provide transportation for students.
The Old Barracks Summer Camp also has enrollment from students outside of the Nicky Fifth Foundation scholarship, with a few spots still available for each week. For information, visit www.barracks.org, email info@barracks.org, or call 609-396-1776.
ABOUT NICKY FIFTH FOUNDATION: The Nicky Fifth Foundation was founded by author and publisher, Lisa Willever and named after the main character in her Nicky Fifth chapter book series. For years, as both an author and founding partner of Franklin Mason Press, Lisa has devoted significant resources to providing children with books and supporting worthy causes. The Nicky Fifth series has evolved into a comprehensive program that strives to empower children through literature, education, and awareness. With schools across New Jersey using the series as part of their curriculum, the opportunities to positively impact children is limitless. As a former public school teacher, a mother of three public school students, and an author who visits approximately 70 schools each year, Lisa enjoys a unique perspective. Since Franklin Mason Press was established in 1999, thousands of dollars have been donated to children's charities and over 100,000 books have been donated to schools and children throughout the state. In addition, by using real New Jersey locations as the setting, Nicky Fifth has inspired thousands of families and schools to explore the Garden State, following the characters' adventures.
ABOUT THE OLD BARRACKS MUSEUM: The Old Barracks Museum preserves the history of a building constructed as a French and Indian War military barracks and used as a Revolutionary War hospital. It also stood witness to Washington's crucial victory at the Battle of Trenton. At the beginning of the 20th century, members of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Colonial Dames organized The Old Barracks Association and spearheaded a campaign to purchase the building. The building has been a museum for over a century, and has frequently been used as a symbol for the state of New Jersey. The Old Barracks Museum welcomes visitors from across the state as well as around the world.
The Old Barracks Museum is located at 101 Barrack Street, Trenton, NJ. Free parking is available in the Capitol Complex Parking Garage. Metered parking is also available near the museum.
4 Tips for Choosing the Right Summer Camp for Your Child
Tick, tock, tick, tock. You see that end-of-school countdown and you know camp is next. It’s been on your to-do list since spring break, but this year you’re just not sure the best camp to send them. Maybe your kids are finally at the minimum age to actually attend or perhaps they’re aging out of another. Remember all the fun you had at camp? You want your child to have the best.summer.ever with new friends, new experiences, and lasting memories, but where do you start? Once you have your budget in mind, here are some tips to consider:
1) Open our Summer Camps Guide as a point of reference. We have day and overnight camps, sports, academics, and most are right in the Mercer County area. If you like using check marks and highlighters to help you make a decision, simply print out the page and start making notes.
1) Your Work Schedule: The first thing you should do is to figure out what schedule you need your kids to be on during the summer, especially if both you and your spouse are full-time working parents. Once you know the hours, that will help you zero in on which camps to start with.
2) What You Need: When your kids are little, you can pretty much have a say in what they do for the summer. Do you want them to learn to swim? Is your objective more socializing before they begin school? Whatever it is that YOU want for your little one will help narrow down your choices. When your child is school-age and starts to have specific interests, talents, or needs (socially or academically), you can discuss the options with them.
3) What They Want: As our children get to a certain age, it’s important to give them some choice (from a list of pre-approved options that fit your budget and your schedule). You want them to have the best.summer.ever and not dread that Monday after the final school bell rings. Start with a simple Q&A with your child about what they would like to spend the summer doing or learning, as long as they understand that other factors like budget, time and location come into play. If your child needs academic enrichment over the summer, but they want to go to a sports or day camp, it’s important to find a compromise that everyone is happy with. And what about overnight camp? Is your child ready for that? Those are all things to discuss together.
4) Interview Your Choices: Once you have a few options, contact the camp to ask any questions that you don’t get answered from the website. Don’t hesitate to ask about emergency procedures, allergy policies and protocols, the camper to counselor ratio, staff training and so on. If you are sending multiple children to the same camp, you an inquire about sibling discounts too. It doesn’t hurt to ask!
How did you choose camp for your child?

10 Questions to Ask When Looking for a Summer Camp
When looking for a summer camp for your child, it's important to do your research. Each camp is different, and you want to make sure the camp you choose is the right camp for your child while also meeting certain criteria. At a minimum, parents should consider asking the following 10 questions when researching summer camps. Finding out the answers to these questions will help you make an informed camp decision.
Each camp has its own philosophy and mission. A camp director should be able to clearly explain the philosophy and mission, and parents should consider whether it matches their own family's values.
Ask about the camp program and what activities the camp offers. Parents should think of what the must-have activities are for their child and make sure the camp offers them. Also ask the camp director about what type of child is a successful participant in their program, and see if it matches a description of your child.
Parents want to learn about the camp director and make sure they click with him. Families want to know who is caring for their child. Get to know the camp director through phone calls, e-mails and in-person visits. Inquire about the camp director's background and whether he is a year-round camp professional or a seasonal employee. Year-round camp professionals spend the year planning for camp and focus their program on youth development. The American Camp Association recommends directors possess a bachelor's degree, have completed in-service training within the past three years, and have at least 16 weeks of camp administrative experience before assuming the responsibilities of director.
Inquire about the age of the staff, their experience, pre-season and on-going staff trainings, background checks, the interview process, camper-to-staff ratios, and supervision in bunks and various activities. At a minimum, camp staff should be trained in safety regulations, emergency procedures, communication, behavior management techniques, appropriate staff and camper behavior, and specific procedures for supervision.
Ask what the length of the program is, and make sure it works with your child's summer schedule. If you are looking into day camp, ask about how long the day is, whether half days or a couple of days a week are options, and whether there is before and after care.
If your child takes medication, has food allergies, has religious obligations, etc., make sure you ask the camp director how these considerations are handled. You want to be upfront about your child's needs and make sure the camp can handle anything your child might need.
Inquire about the camp's safety measures that are in place. These include asking about a medical professional on property, emergency plans, staff screening procedures, instructor qualifications, water safety, and transportation.
A large number of returning campers is usually a good indication of a high level of satisfaction with the camp's programming and operation.
The American Camp Association (ACA) is a nonprofit organization that has the only camp accreditation program in the country. Ask if the program has chosen to participate. ACA chooses summer camps based upon 300 health, safety, and program standards. It goes well beyond what is required by the Department of Health, addressing specific areas of programming, personnel, health care, emergency response, management practices, and youth development.
Parents should ask the camp director for references and call a few camp families for their feelings on camp. Ask about the camp director, staff, communication policies, activities, and overall satisfaction with the camp.
6 Summer Camp Benefits by Jess Michaels
For generations, children have spent their summers at day and sleepaway camps, trying new activities such as swimming, hiking, and various sports. But what many families may not realize is that camp provides children with different opportunities to develop important life skills that are difficult to achieve in any other environment. Below are just a few of the many benefits your children will gain from the summer camp experience.
At camp, children gain valuable life skills. In fact, an organization called The Partnership for 21st Century Skills (comprising a group of businesses, education leaders, and policymakers) has found there is a large gap between the knowledge students learn in school and the skills they need to be successful in the 21st century. After extensive research, the organization determined that some of the skills necessary to become successful adults are communication, collaboration, creativity, leadership, socialization, and problem solving. All of these areas are fostered in the camp environment.
Campers are always communicating with each other, either on the field or in the bunk, learning to work together as a team and as part of the camp community. They also get to be leaders at camp, whether through guiding a first-time younger camper or managing their camp Olympics team. Campers learn to navigate on their own and solve problems by themselves. They engage in many creative outlets, too.
There is more to learning than test taking and achieving good grades. Camp offers one of the most powerful learning environments and can be a place where a child's social education takes place. It provides children with the opportunity to try new activities. When children succeed at these activities, they build self-esteem. Children also build social skills and problem- solving skills by being part of a supportive community and partaking in activities together. Campers are challenged and encouraged to grow every day.
Today's children spend more than 7.5 hours a day engaged with technology, which often takes the place of vital hands-on activities and socialization opportunities. The majority of summer camps ban most technology, including TV, smartphones, tablets, and personal computers. Taking a break from technology over the summer allows children to communicate face to face.
Balancing school schedules, homework, and extracurricular activities doesn't leave much room for play. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) reports that free and unstructured play is healthy and essential for helping children to reach important social, emotional, and cognitive developmental milestones. It also helps kids manage stress. Traditional summer camps give children plenty of play time, which leads to healthy emotional and social development.
Students often attend school year after year with the same peers, which can lead to labeling and being "stuck" with a particular perception. A child may become known as studious, quiet, etc., when, really, he can be boisterous in another setting. Children who go to day or sleepaway camps meet a whole other group of people in a different environment. Often times, a child will break out of his supposed categorization if given the chance. Children get to reinvent themselves at camp and be who they truly want to be, which helps them to build confidence.
When children go to camp, they are given the opportunity to grow more independent. Whether for a day or an entire summer, separation from one's parents means a camper has to learn to rely on himself and other trusted adults and peers. Separation from parents gives a child the ability to think independently, which builds self-esteem.

Athletic Programs at PDS Summer Camp
As the weather turns warmer and thoughts of summer enter our mind, I wanted to share with you the benefits of exercise for children, and share updates on some of our offerings for summertime.
Regular exercise, which can include nature walks, unstructured play, bicycling, playing tag or participating on sports teams, benefits children in significant ways. Kids who are active will have:
Stronger muscle and bones
A leaner body because exercise helps control body fat
Be less likely to become overweight
Decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes
Lower blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels
Have a better outlook on life
Besides enjoying the health benefits of regular exercise, kids who are physically fit sleep better. They're also better able to handle physical and emotional challenges — from running to catch a bus to studying for a test. With these benefits in mind, here are some of the athletic programs we are offering:
New for 2016 - Gr. 6-9 - Mountain Biking Adventure - Full Day- 1 week
If you love to ride your mountain bike and you enjoy the thrill of adventure, this camp is for you. This year, Summer Programs is expanding its summer mountain biking program. Intermediate and advanced riders can look forward to an all day camp where we will explore not only local trails but also those beyond. Come and experience the hills and valleys of Round Valley Reservoir, the fire roads in the New Jersey Pine Barrens, and Six Mile Run’s challenging single tracks. Ride along the North Branch of the Raritan River as you explore the beauty of New Jersey outdoors! Transportation to and from our riding venues is provided – mountain bike and helmets are required.
Our Ever Popular - Gr. 1-9 - Tennis - 1 week
Players of all ability are welcomed, as our skilled coaches will group campers accordingly. The program includes a variety of drills to teach forehands, backhands, net play, game strategy, serves, and much more. We also incorporate lead-up games, friendly competition, and fun play too.
Cool Off at the Ice Rink - Gr. 1-12 - Ice Skating (3:30-5:30) - 2 weeks
All sessions welcome skaters to a structured late afternoon skating workshop. Campers are coached in basic skills, strengthening their foundation, which is designed to enhance all forms of ice skating. It is for all ability levels from beginners to basic skills, and beyond. Each two-week session finishes up with an informal group skating performance presented to family and friends.
If You Love Sports - Gr. 3-6 - Athletic All-stars - 1 week
Do you love sports? Do you love all sports, both indoors and outdoors? If so, then Athletic All-stars is for you! Each day for a week, students will focus on one new sport. This means in one week campers will experience 5 different sports! The camp's goals are exposure to a variety of sports, fair play, competition, and fun. Sports possibly offered during the week may include, Football, Basketball, Floor Hockey, Baseball/Softball, Lacrosse, Track and Field, Soccer, Volleyball, and Field Hockey
For the Sports Enthusiast - Gr. 5-8 - Sports Spectacular! - 1 week
Sports Spectacular is a general physical education camp designed for middle school-aged campers who want to play numerous sports, make new friends, and be active. Sports will be played both indoors and outdoors and may include soccer, basketball, flag football and much more.
En Garde - Gr. 5-12 - Fencing - 2 weeks
Parry! Riposte! This program is an introduction to fencing, from basic skills to advanced techniques. We do conditioning exercises and learn fencing fundamentals like the en garde position, lunge, parry, and right-of-way. When students are ready, we move on to more advanced defensive and attacking moves. At the end of the session, students participate in a friendly and safe competition with full electric gear. No experience is required, but experienced fencers are also welcome. We provide masks, fencing weapons, and protective equipment.

Girl Scouts of Central & Southern NJ Now Registering Summer Camp for Girls
Spring is coming and summer is just around the corner! Parents and children all over New Jersey are exploring options for what to do this summer and camp is on the top of the list. Camp for Girls, the premier summer camp program offered by the Girl Scouts of Central & Southern NJ, offers a variety of fun and engaging adventures for girls with day camps and a resident camp.
Each of our camps blends classic camp activities like canoeing, swimming, and campfires with new, exciting adventures like rock wall climbing, archery and zip lines. To make it more fun, each week has specialty themed levels (like SplashZone, Mad 4 Science, Campapalooza, or Sports Spree) that explore ideas and help girls develop new skills based on the theme each camper chooses per week. Each camp option focuses on activities and experiences that will help girls build courage, confidence and character. Girls are given opportunities to try new things that are on the edge of their comfort zone, while in a supportive environment. All of our camps are open to current and non-Girl Scout members. All camps provide transportation options as well.
As part of the core leadership program, the Girl Scouts offer a unique outdoor opportunity for girls in grades K-12 to attend one of three summer camps: Oak Spring Day Camp in Somerset, Camp Inawendiwin Day Camp in Tabernacle and Camp Sacajawea Resident Camp in Newfield. All camps are American Camp Association (ACA) Accredited, in addition to following the NJ Youth Camp Safety Act requirements. Safety is our first priority.
“Camp has always been a special place for me. I spent many summers there as a camper, and later as staff. The best part of camp for me is getting to see girls grow and become more confident and comfortable in their own skin.”, states Caitlyn Wyand, Camp Sacajawea Director for GSCSNJ. It really is somewhere that girls can go to be themselves and learn to have courage, confidence and character.”

Tips for Choosing the Right Summer Camp
Summers are magical. Schools out, the days are long, and free time abounds.
Yet after a month or so, boredom sets in and kids start gravitating toward the couch, glued to smartphones, binging on Netflix, and playing video games for hours on end. Don’t you wish your kids spent their summers designing video games instead of just playing them? That’s where summer camps come in.
Summer camps are great for balancing out the unstructured, school-free summer months. They’re fun, they build character, and they provide opportunities for campers to meet new friends and reconnect with classmates. Plus, kids can discover new interests and stay intellectually engaged.
With today’s overabundance of camps, there’s literally something for every child. On the flip side, with so many options, choosing can make you feel a lot like Goldilocks on the hunt for a camp that’s just right.
Armed with these five tips on how to select a summer camp, you’ll be on your way to finding the perfect option in no time!
Before you can pick the right summer camp, you need to set some expectations. Start by asking yourself what you’d like your children to gain from the camp experience. Want her to meet new friends with similar interests? Try a niche camp in a subject she loves. Looking to keep him thinking throughout the summer months? With a commonsense balance of indoor and outdoor activities, an academic camp like iD Tech will keep him intellectually engaged.
Be sure to include older children in your conversations about summer camps, starting with a discussion on expectations. As tweens and teens get older, the traditional idea of “summer camp” can start to lose appeal. By understanding how they’d like to spend their summer, you can reframe the conversation to find a summer program that will meet their needs.
The goal is to get older kids excited about camp by finding programs that speak to their current interests. By making sure you and your teen are on the same page, you’re much more likely to find a camp that you both love.
Once you have a good idea of what you’re hoping to gain from camp, it’s time to narrow down which type of programs will meet your needs. Here’s what you can expect from today’s most popular summer camp genres:
In the same way that a stellar teacher can turn a boring subject into something magical, the right summer camp instructor will make your child’s camp experience unforgettable. What makes a good camp instructor? To start, they should be passionate about teaching kids. We’ve all seen the instructors who are glued to their smartphones; that’s not who you want supervising your children. Instead, instructors should be fun, upbeat, and both passionate and knowledgeable about the subjects they’re teaching.
Determining the quality of instructors before attending camp is difficult but doable. Many camps provide an instructor section on their website, explaining the various qualifications they require from potential instructors. You can also look for first-hand accounts of the instructors by reading student and parent reviews. In addition, look for low student-to-instructor ratios (no more than 10 campers per teacher) and be sure your that your camp runs background checks on all instructors. Safety first!
Summer camp prices vary drastically—and for good reason. But don’t let sticker shock keep you from the camp of your (kid’s) dreams. Instead, evaluate price as part of the bigger picture, as much as budgets allow. Here’s how:
By registering for camp, you’re investing time and trust into the summer camp provider, and you’ll undoubtedly have questions. So don’t be afraid to research, research, research, to ensure you make the correct decision. There are endless ways to learn more about camps that catch your kid’s interest. You can attend a local camp fair, browse competitor websites, take a tour of the camp facilities, read customer reviews, or discuss the programs and courses with a customer service rep.
You can even tap into your own social group for suggestions. Ask around and see where other friends have sent their kids to camp. A personal recommendation is often a great indicator of what your student’s experience will be like. Plus, kids always have a great time when they get to attend camp with a few friends.
We designed our summer camps with your kids’ creativity in mind. That’s why we hire awesome, tech-savvy camp instructors and provide a commonsense balance of indoor and outdoor camp activities. Our hands-on courses are taught in small groups of just 8 students per instructor—guaranteed—so your kids will get personalized instruction whether they have experience with technology or are just starting out.
There’s never been a better time (or place!) to meet new friends, learn awesome tech skills, and have a blast!
Check out our summer programs for kids and teen summer camps, or give our Program Advisors a call at 1-888-709-8324 for help selecting the perfect course or location. We hope to see your kids at camp this summer!

For some parents who either relish their own memories of summer camp or who wish to provide their children with an experience that eluded them, sending their child to summer camp can be a bittersweet moment since it heralds a new level of independence in the parent/child relationship. And with such an abundance of camps to choose from—equestrian camp, soccer camp, even video game design camp—there has never been a better time to be a kid considering to spend a little time away from home this summer.
There is one problem though. After putting down the glossy brochure, reality sets in. How are you going to pay for it? This is no small consideration since camp fees, transportation costs, equipment and other expenses can run several thousand dollars per child. You can do it, but it will require good planning, flexibility and teamwork to make the dream a reality.
First, it is essential that you begin planning in advance. Saving for camp should be part of your overall family budget. Since you will need the funds within one year, you can’t afford to risk the principal by investing in stocks, mutual funds, etc. Instead, in order to make the most of your savings, stash the money in a high yield savings account or money market fund.
In addition to your local banks, check out Internet sites like www.bankrate.com that provide current rate information from providers across the country. Remember, while saving for camp is important, it should not be done at the expense of more critical savings goals such as retirement, college and emergency funds. A good strategy for most families is to first build an emergency fund that is equal to at least three months of living expenses.
Working as a team, you have a variety of options to boost savings. These include switching from a high interest credit card to one with a lower interest rate. And why not have rotating “theme” nights where each family member prepares a favorite dinner along with an activity instead of eating out? The point is to engage the entire family in the process, thereby creating an increased sense of ownership. You will be surprised how little things like letting your kids hunt for coupons for their favorite foods can yield big results over time.
A potentially large source of funding can come from your income tax refund. Instead of simply spending the money, have your refund direct deposited into a savings account. By not handling the money, you are less likely to spend it. Also consider downsizing or canceling the expensive family vacation. Make sure you communicate to your child in a positive way that some sacrifices are necessary to pay for camp. Don’t worry about the guilt; you are sharing an important life lesson.
Depending on age, your child can also contribute to the effort by working. It is reasonable to expect your child to save money from babysitting, clearing snow, or working at the supermarket. Of course, as parents, it is our responsibility to carefully monitor where our children work and how many hours they spend there. No matter how much a child wants to go to camp, a job should never become a higher priority than school or a balanced social life. Under the right conditions, a carefully monitored work situation, in addition to be economically rewarding can provide a child with confidence, interpersonal skills and time management skills. It’s a win-win situation.
Be practical. You should manage your child’s expectations toward a summer camp experience that will be fulfilling and affordable. Putting stress on your finances to pay for camp is not a good idea. Be creative. Don’t be afraid to ask the camp about their financial aid policy. Some camps may even allow you to volunteer your time at the camp in exchange for free tuition. Don’t get caught up in the “it’s so expensive, it must be better” mindset. By contrast, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts have a long tradition of providing top notch camping experiences for children at a very modest expense. Scouting provides many other benefits to children including enhancing their college applications. Now that’s smart.
Determining the Effectiveness of Weight-Loss Summer Camps
Many children and young adults in the U.S. attend weight-loss camps over the summer. Sometimes known as "fat camps," the goal of these programs is simple: lose weight while having fun. Most campers report significant weight loss and having had a positive experience.
However, what differentiates good weight-loss camps from less effective weight-loss camps is not only the quality of the facilities, the food and the staff, but whether the camp experience leads to long-term behavioral change.
Good weight-loss camps direct their entire programs at changing behavior over the long term. Sports, activities, educational and clinical programs are all part of an overall clinical design to teach new behaviors and habits. Cognitive behavioral therapy is likely a core element of the clinical program. And because it is unlikely that a child's behavior will change completely over the course of a summer, let alone one month in the summer, good weight-loss camps will provide follow-up or after-care programs, checking in with kids and their families. Exceptional camps may try to involve families towards the end of the camp experience in an attempt to change the environment into which the child is returning. Some new camps are acting as feeders into residential schools, which enroll students for 6 months or longer - a length of time that is likely to allow for substantial behavioral change.
Other weight-loss camps are more oriented towards short-term weight loss. Portion sizes are reduced. Diet is changed. The activity level is high. But there is effectively no overall clinical model that will effect long-term behavioral change. Frequent weighing is a hallmark of less effective programs. While weighing can be a boost to morale over the summer, it will not be a constructive habit for a child whose behavior has not otherwise changed once he or she returns home.
So if you're thinking about weight-loss camp this summer, think about asking these questions:
