Princeton Summer Camps Cancelled for Summer 2020

Both the Princeton Recreation Department Day Camp and Teen Travel Camp have been cancelled for summer 2020 as a result of the COVID pandemic in an effort to protect the safety, health & well-being of the hundreds of campers, camp counselors, and staff. The Recreation Department is committed to developing a variety of new and/or modified programs this summer, some virtual, and hopefully some in-person later in the summer. Full refunds will be issued shortly for those that have already registered for camp. If you prefer a credit to your account instead of a refund, please contact the Recreation Department no later than Thursday, May 28 via email at: recreation@princetonnj.gov

From Recreation Department Director Ben Stentz:

On a personal note, I want to share my sadness with you about this difficult decision. While I do believe this is the safest decision on behalf of the children of our community, it doesn't make it any easier to accept. I was a camper at the PRD Day Camp nearly 35 years ago, and later I worked as a Camp Counselor. Years later, my son attended both Day and Travel Camp. PRD camps are a critical rite of passage for our kids and part of the year over year, and generation to generation fabric of what makes Princeton special.

ACP Art FUNdamentals: ABC (Art Builds Character)
Specifically created for ages 5-9, these sessions feature engaging weekly themes that inspire individual creativity and group collaborations. Final group projects will be on display in ACP's award-winning Taplin Gallery. Representative themes include Tall Tales & Short Stories, Under the Big Top, Animal Kingdom, Water Wonderland, and Mythological Journey. Art projects employ a wide variety of mixed media, encouraging campers to explore new techniques and subjects. A number of these sessions also feature a theater camp option (culminating in a final performance each week.) Half-day and full-day sessions are available, as is extended care.

Summer Arts Studios: The Cool Place to Be
These weekly sessions offer more intensive pursuits of wide-ranging studio and performing arts experiences for ages 10-12 and 13-16, designed to engage students and enhance their experience through individualized attention. Many weeks feature two related areas in which participants build upon their knowledge in each and consider the relationship between them. Other weeks feature immersion in a particular discipline: Making Music Videos, Museum Masters (studio work supplemented by visits to Princeton University Art Museum), Claymation, Fashion Week, Pottery 101 (including wheel throw), Video Production, Theater Adventures, among others. Another option is for a half-day in either Graphic Design or Darkroom Photography. We have so much to offer these developing and inquiring minds!

Campers will be treated to all kinds of fun this summer – reuniting with friends and making new ones, exploring different subjects and media, discovering new art forms and movements, creating individual works, and collaborating on group projects under the guidance of professional artist-instructors. Registration is open to the general public, with special discounts available for ACP Members and scholarships for qualifying students.

Looking for a special musical experience for your child this summer?  Westminster Conservatory of Music offers a wide array of camps and activities for children age 2 through high school.

This year’s offerings include three new programs: Summer Orchestra Week, Summer Band Week and Jazz Starters Camp.

Summer Orchestra and Band Weeks are designed for band and orchestra students in grades 4 through 6 who started studying an instrument in school the year and would like to continue playing in an ensemble during the summer.  Students enrolled in the program will receive a small group lesson each day to prepare them for a large ensemble rehearsal.  Campers will share what they’ve learned by presenting a concert the final day of camp.  It’s an ideal program for students who want to improve their sight-reading skills, learn new songs, make friends from other schools and get a head start for the next school year.

The Jazz Starters Camp is for students in grades 5 through 8.  The half-day program is a great opportunity for children with no prior jazz experience and who want to explore how to play jazz on their instrument.  The program includes small group lessons, as well as specialty classes in jazz history and theory and drumming.

Additionally, the Conservatory will offer once again the camps that are popular with students from throughout the region.  This includes early childhood camps for children between age 2 and grade 4, instrumental campus for students in grades 1 through 8, solo and chamber performance camps for grades 6 through 12, jazz camps for grades 5 through 12, and musical theater camps for grades 1 through 12.  Programs are offered at the main Conservatory location on the Westminster Choir College campus and John Witherspoon Middle School in Princeton borough and also at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Princeton.  In addition to its summer camps, the Conservatory also offers a flexible summer schedule of private instruction in piano, voice, strings, classical and electric guitar, woodwinds and brass, as well as Suzuki piano and violin.

Established in 1970, Westminster Conservatory is the community music school of Rider University’s Westminster College of the Arts, offering music instruction and community ensembles for all ages and stages of ability.  To learn more about summer camps and year-round offerings, go to www.rider.edu/conservatory or call 609-921-7104.  Discounted tuition is available through May 15.

Participants included (left to right) front row:  Chris Krupa, Can Sener, Nagarajan Srinivasan, Michael Bramnick, Arlene Eckel, Yusha Hu, Brian Dawson, and Andrew Muc. Back row: Richard Mason, Diane Hasili of the YWCA, Ashay Shah, Nat Duncan, Justin Gilli, Robert Mignone, Christian Schneider, Mike McNeely, Joe Andryszewski, Brad Radimer, Kofi Berantuo, Jay Hodgkins, and Judy Hutton, YWCA CEO.

Determining the Effectiveness of Weight-Loss Summer Camps

Many children and young adults in the U.S. attend weight-loss camps over the summer. Sometimes known as "fat camps," the goal of these programs is simple: lose weight while having fun. Most campers report significant weight loss and having had a positive experience.

However, what differentiates good weight-loss camps from less effective weight-loss camps is not only the quality of the facilities, the food and the staff, but whether the camp experience leads to long-term behavioral change.

Good weight-loss camps direct their entire programs at changing behavior over the long term. Sports, activities, educational and clinical programs are all part of an overall clinical design to teach new behaviors and habits. Cognitive behavioral therapy is likely a core element of the clinical program. And because it is unlikely that a child's behavior will change completely over the course of a summer, let alone one month in the summer, good weight-loss camps will provide follow-up or after-care programs, checking in with kids and their families. Exceptional camps may try to involve families towards the end of the camp experience in an attempt to change the environment into which the child is returning. Some new camps are acting as feeders into residential schools, which enroll students for 6 months or longer - a length of time that is likely to allow for substantial behavioral change.

Other weight-loss camps are more oriented towards short-term weight loss. Portion sizes are reduced. Diet is changed. The activity level is high. But there is effectively no overall clinical model that will effect long-term behavioral change. Frequent weighing is a hallmark of less effective programs. While weighing can be a boost to morale over the summer, it will not be a constructive habit for a child whose behavior has not otherwise changed once he or she returns home.

So if you're thinking about weight-loss camp this summer, think about asking these questions:

  • - How would you describe the clinical program?
  • - How does it engender long-term behavioral change?
  • - Who designed the clinical program?
  • - Who is the clinical director, monitoring the effectiveness of the program?
  • - Can I see outcomes data? (Blinded data is fine.)
  • - Is there an after-care program?
  • - How are families involved?
  • - Do you refer campers to residential school programs?
