Unionville Vineyards is excited to be a part of a newly founded coalition of New Jersey wineries, dedicated to the promotion and production of fine wine in the Garden State. The Winemakers Co-Op is comprised of Unionville, Beneduce Vineyards, Heritage Vineyards, and Working Dog Winery. Since there is no technical definition of "fine wine," one of the first things we had to do when forming was set the standards to which Co-Op wineries will be held. At least 51% of the wines sold by each winery will be from 100% New Jersey-grown vitis vinifera, the classic wine grapes you're most familiar with. These wines, such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Riesling, will need to be produced dry or classically off-dry. Wines from hybrid grapes, other fruits, and blends using these will count against the criteria. All tasting events produced by The Winemakers Co-Op will exclusively pour dry wines from the vinifera grapes grown in New Jersey.
Which brings us to our first event of the year, held in a couple weeks right here at Unionville. The Fine Wine Showcase will highlight over 30 bottles from the four Co-Op wineries. Gourmet sandwiches will be sold by Ruth's Chris Steak House, and Mike Dugan, one of NJ's best known Blues guitarists, will perform with his jazz-blues fusion band, Cheek2Cheek. This will be a tasting event unlike any other, with chances to meet and talk wine with the owners and winemakers from the Co-Op. The relaxed walk around wine tasting will use both indoor and outdoor spaces at Unionville, and be limited to just 400 attendees. Early bird tickets are discounted to $29, and are available until midnight tonight. Starting tomorrow, General Admission tickets increase to $35 per person. Plan on a trip to New Hope's trendy new Nektar Wine Bar for small plates and a worldly collection of wine, beer and whiskeys. All attendees will receive a buy one / get one dish offer from Nektar at the Showcase admission tent. If you're coming from a distance, our hotel partner, Main Street Manor in Flemington is a lovely bed and breakfast in Flemington with rooms available for Co-Op guests.
