Blackwell’s Organic Gelato is pleased to announce it has gained Star-K Kosher Certification. “I am thrilled that we are able to meet the demands of our customers by offering Kosher certified products,” said Marcia Blackwell, Founder/President of Blackwell’s Organic Gelato. “We began manufacturing our Kosher organic desserts on April 1, which means they should be in consumer’s hands by month end.”
To achieve Star-K Certification, Blackwell’s Organic was required to meet very strict requirements. These included providing documentation for kosher certification of all their ingredients, Rabbinic inspection of their manufacturing and processing plant, as well as on-going inspections of documentation, ingredients, and processes.
Being Certified by Star-K is a very prestigious distinction as Star-K is in the forefront of integrating the worlds of Kashrus (referring to Kosher dietary laws) and technology. Their Rabbinic staff is headed by Rabbi Moshe Heinemann, one of the world’s foremost authorities on the integration of the complexities of food technology and Kosher requirements.

The rapidly, rising global demand for products bearing a trusted, recognizable Kosher logo, like Star-K has been similar to the growth in demand for products labeled certified organic. These two intersecting trends have given rise to a growing specialty food category “kosher organic.” Blackwell’s Organic gelatos and sorbettos meet both the strict requirements of Jewish dietary laws and the USDA National Organic Program specifications.
Kosher organic product sales have been growing annually; increasing numbers of kosher consumers are requesting organic foods, and more kosher manufacturers are producing organic foods. There has been a major impact on sales of these doubly certified products, and Mintel research data indicates that, in 2008, both Kosher and Organic were amongst the top ten claims for new products.
