If a fast, relatively inexpensive restaurant that uses healthy and fresh ingredients to make high quality meals from a large menu sounds like want you need for lunch, Olives is the place for you. Held at the pinnacle of cheap, quick places in town, Olives is a local favorite for high school students, college kids, and local professionals.
At the deli they have an array of fresh sandwiches made daily, ready to be eaten lying behind the glass. Dried fruit and nuts line the shelves next to many other healthy snacks. Delicious looking treats sit in the bakery refrigerator case waiting to be enjoyed. Also, there are two refrigerators filled with different juices, sodas, and other beverages. There are hot specials prepared or made to order, as well as prepared salads, quiches, meats, and other dishes ready for take out. The bakery also makes custom cakes for special occasions.
Today, I had a tomato, basil, and mozzarella sandwich. This was one of the prepared sandwiches, so it was wrapped and ready to go in seconds. Although it had already been made, all the ingredients were as fresh as can be. The baguette was crisp with a little bit of crunch on the outside but had soft and smooth texture on the inside. The tomato had a garden-fresh flavor and feel. Basil accented the mozzarella nicely, pulling the sandwich together for the classic, simple taste.
However, Olives is a little pricier and serves smaller portions than some of the other spots in Princeton. My sandwich was about $6 and left me still hungry. At most places, I can walk in with a ten-dollar bill and leave with more than enough food and a drink, but a bag of chips or a side is needed as well to satiate my appetite at Olives.
There is some available seating inside including bar stools and a couple tables, but your best bet would be taking it to go. The employees are nice and friendly, but aren’t likely to strike up a conversation with you. Olives has certainly earned its way to the top in the eyes of many. Its fresh, high quality ingredients and dishes rightfully make it a local favorite. Although its portions are slightly smaller and prices slightly higher, Olives is one of the most frequented quick restaurants in town.
